Wifi is a term that designates the technology that allows transmitting data via the internet without the use of cables . The term comes from the name of the company that developed the technology, the Wi-Fi Alliance, and wi-fi is a popular denomination, the original name of this technology is IEEE 802.11.
The expression wi-fi contained in the name Wi-Fi Alliance, is a contraction of the English language expression wireless fidelity , which means wireless fidelity. The expression appears inspired by the expression Hi-Fi , often used mainly in the music industry and which appears as a contraction of high fidelity , which in turn can be translated as high fidelity.
Wi-Fi technology works by connecting computer networks by transmitting data via radio waves. These waves are transmitted and received through a router. All computers that are inside the hotspot , or action radio, are able to receive this information, if they are properly configured to do so.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Wi-Fi
The main advantage of Wi-Fi is the convenience and versatility that the technology provides by not needing to use cables. Among the disadvantages are low security and the ease with which private Wi-Fi networks can be accessed; and the sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation emitted by household appliances that impair the quality and speed of the connection.
Difference between WiFi and Wireless
It is very common to confuse the concepts of wi-fi and wireless, but despite being similar concepts they have important differences.
Wireless, means wireless, so any technology that does not require wiring can be called wireless, such as bluetooth and wi-fi. Wi-Fi is the technology that transmits the internet without wires or cables. Consequently, we can say that all Wi-Fi is a type of wireless, but only a certain type of wireless can be called Wi-Fi.
